Room 17

There are 16 Habits of Mind as devised by Art Costa. These habits of mind help us to learn as best we can using intelligent thinking and solve problems effectively. In Room 17 we will be working on the following Habits of Mind some of which are also part of our school values.

Managing Impulsivity - In Room 17 we are learning to STOP and THINK!! What do I need to be doing? Is this the best thing to say or do? Could there be another better thing to say or do? We remember to listen to each other's ideas and think about other's feelings.

Persistence - This habit of mind will be perhaps the most important for the year and will be an ongoing part of the class programme. We are learning to be "I can do" kids in Room 17. We keep trying to do things even when they seem a bit hard. We don't give up easily but just do our best and try again. We ask for help when we need it. Sometimes we can think up different ways to do things.

Listening to others with empathy and understanding - We are working on listening to others in our class and not interrupting with our own thoughts and ideas. We try to listen carefully and then ask questions. Questions begin with Why, What, Who, When, How, or Where. If we listen and look carefully, we might be able to see how the other person is feeling.

Finding humour - It is fun to laugh and see the funny side of things. We can also laugh at ourselves when something funny happens. As a class we like to be happy and laugh out loud.

Wonderment and Awe - In Room 17 we are curious about the world around us and show interest and awe about many different things. There is so much to find out about. We have a "I wonder" wall where we write down questions that we are wondering about and try to find out the answers. We know we can look for answers in books, on the internet, or ask someone.

Gathering data through the senses - We know that we can find out about the world around us in many different ways. We can use all our 5 senses - seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting to get information.
